The Big Experiment: integrating blogs and galleries
Mar 13th, 2006 by scaredpoet

As you’ve probably noticed, updates have been a bit lacking as of late.? That’s because lately I’ve been working more on tinkering the infrastructure and seeing what can be done to integrate a gallery solution to the already-existing blog based foundation I have here.? The idea is to allow a series of photographs or artwork to be displayed in an organized and automatic fashion, rather than use a kludged-together solution of just linking to files manually within a post.
So far, the solutions haven’t been easy ones.? A number of plug-ins are advertised for WordPress that claim to allow gallery integration. Most of them haven’t reached “version 1.0” stage, and with good reason: they just aren’t ready for prime time.? Attempts to integrate each led me to dead ends, either because of poor documentation, serious bugs, or a combination of both.

Ultimately, I’ve given up on a fully-integrated solution for now.? Instead, I’ll have to resort to running a separate phpWebgallery module, and then linking to the galleries as they are created.? phpWebgallery seems to be pretty thorough, however, I’m not 100% familiar with it yet.? So, some bugs still need to be worked out.

In the meantime, I do have a test gallery ready to go, and the subject is’s perennial mascot, Loki.? Have a look!

The War on Spam
Aug 22nd, 2005 by scaredpoet

I hate spam.

Yeah, I know, the above comment is a lot like saying “I breathe air.” But I really do. Not only because it’s well, spam, and it is the epitome of everything that is wrong with humankind (greed, stupidity, arrogance, etc.), but also that because of spam, millions of lines of extra code has to be written into e-mail relay servers, web site comment forms, SMS gateways, and even blogs just like this one, to prevent a wash of useless text from Ephedrine and Viagra-mongering morons, who by the way, think that you really really need to check out their online poker site. Long ago, this site was undefended against such spam, and my “lilo must DIE” diatribe on the matter became site history.

April Fool’s

So yeah, I was lame and did an April Fool’s joke. Click to view the site as it was for most of April 1, 2005.

AH! What happened?! It’s BRIGHT IN HERE!!
Feb 19th, 2005 by scaredpoet

Yeah I know… the site’s lookin’ a li’l wonky today. I’m in the middle of a major code revision, and to keep the site up, I’ve had to fallback to a simpler design.

I’m not sure how long this change will last, as some serious css changes need to be made to the original layout to get it things up and running properly. If the old style sheet does come into compliance, well, it’ll probably be very obvious. 🙂

UPDATE: Fixed! I think…

The original design just wasn’t cutting it, so for now I’ve come up with an alternative. This doesn’t look too shabby, though if I can get the old CSS to work a little better with the new coding scheme from WP 1.5, I’ll bring back the old design.

This site is now running:

WordPress 1.5 “Strayhorn”

PHP 5.0.3 (finally!)

MySQL 4.1

Apache httpd 2.0.53

And getting all of them to play nice isn’t easy, but rewarding once it does happen. 🙂

E-mail services added
Feb 6th, 2005 by scaredpoet has full service e-mail now. W00t!

And for what it’s worth, I’ve dumped my previous e-mail service provider, mailblocks. They were acquired by AOL some months ago, and well, we all know what happens to great companies once AOL has gotten their mits into them.
