{"id":460,"date":"2005-09-10T11:05:39","date_gmt":"2005-09-10T15:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scaredpoet.com\/wordpress\/?p=460"},"modified":"2008-03-06T19:02:30","modified_gmt":"2008-03-07T00:02:30","slug":"the-sprint-nextel-merger-and-what-you-should-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scaredpoet.com\/blog\/?p=460","title":{"rendered":"The Sprint Nextel merger, and what you should know."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sprint.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gizmodo.com\/gadgets\/images\/ViewMedia.jpg\" alt=\"Sprint\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>CNet News <a href=\"http:\/\/reviews.cnet.com\/4520-3504_7-6310178-1.html?tag=nl.e501\">has an interesting article analyzing the &#8220;new Sprint.&#8221;<\/a>  A lot of it points out some of the same issues I raised <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scaredpoet.com\/wordpress\/?p=211\">when I first complained<\/a> about what a dumb idea this was.  Namely:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; While investors love a merger,<em> any<\/em> merger, this one combines two companies that couldn&#8217;t possibly have less in common from a technical standpoint, unless one company happened to be a cell phone company and the other happened to, oh, sell seafood or something.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; No synergy until at least 2010.  Basically the &#8220;new&#8221; Sprint is going to be running <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IDEN\">&#8220;old&#8221; technology<\/a> until at least that date, right alongside its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdg.org\/technology\/index.asp\">existing state-of-the-art network<\/a>, and trying to leverage both as somehow equal, even though they speak different languages.<\/p>\n<p>The only real gain seems to be that Sprint gets to leapfrog to the #3 spot in the US, in terms of how many paying customers it has, even if those customers aren&#8217;t unified.
