{"id":504,"date":"2005-11-11T17:32:50","date_gmt":"2005-11-11T22:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scaredpoet.com\/wordpress\/?p=504"},"modified":"2005-11-11T17:39:25","modified_gmt":"2005-11-11T22:39:25","slug":"drm-goes-00bar-l33t-l0lz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scaredpoet.com\/blog\/?p=504","title":{"rendered":"Sony&#8217;s DRM goes 00BAR l33t L0LZ!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, after Sony insisted that its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ovum.com\/news\/euronews.asp?id=3468\">DRM rootkit technology<\/a>, used as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/article2\/0,1895,1880543,00.asp\">copy protection scheme in its CDs<\/a> was &#8220;not a threat,&#8221; trojans exploiting the software&#8217;s inherent introduction of vulnerabilities are now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/article2\/0,1895,1885868,00.asp\">beginning to appear in the wild<\/a>.  Way to go Sony!  After all, who needs security when copying music is at stake?  The <em>musicians<\/em> need to be protected!  The <strong><em>musicians<\/em><\/strong>, man!<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, after Sony agreed to make a &#8220;patch&#8221; available so that users can &#8220;remove&#8221; the DRM software, experts who analyzed the &#8220;patch&#8221; consider it to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20051111.gtsony1111\/BNStory\/Technology\/\">even worse than the rookit it purports to remove<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Again, way to go Sony!<\/p>\n<p>And yet, the record companies wonder why people like me have stopped buying CDs altogether.<\/p>\n<p>While it may be difficult to determine for sure if your computer is affected (unless of course, you&#8217;ve never, ever played a Sony Music CD on it, ever), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annoyances.org\/exec\/show\/article03-018\">there is a way to easily innoculate against the software it installs<\/a> if it&#8217;s not already there.
