So yeah, this site was offline for a a good while yesterday, due to two factors… the first being an impromptu, hurried move of the web server to a different server room (and thus, different subnet, meaning a new ip address), and secondly, by my screwing up the DNS entry to reflect the new IP address and not figuring out my folly until several hours later. Sorry about that. I know so many of you love to be bored by this site. 🙂

The neverending comment spam battle
Jan 15th, 2005 by scaredpoet

I’m now using SpamKarma to regulate the torrent of comment spam flooding this site. Most people (I hope) won’t notice anything different, but the fact that I no longer have to manually delete comments bearing cialis or Texas Hold’Em poker site ads is a nice comfort. 🙂

If somehow you do manage to trip the spam detector, you’ll still be able to validate the entry using a Captcha. For visually impaired users, authentication through e-mail is also possible.

It’s in testing now, so please drop a line if anyone experiences difficulty with it.

Welcome to the new server!

You are now accessing scaredpoet.com through server loki. Effective today, the old argonaut server will no longer be updated, and will be decommissioned in one week, assuming all goes well here.

All visitors should experience noticeably faster response times as a result of the migration. To demonstrate, you can click on this link to load the old server. Then click on the referring link there to bring you back. See the difference? That’s what building from non-junk will get ya. 🙂

Note: If you’re reading this after being referred by argonaut, it might help to reboot your computer and/or router if you use one, as both will retain the old DNS information for this site for awhile.

Time for better digs

Let’s not mince words. This blog runs on total junk. Literally.

Comments unmoderated again for now.
Dec 21st, 2004 by scaredpoet

Some new antispam measures are being tried out, which (if it works) will eliminate the need for me to approve comments before posting. We’ll see what happens.

It involves some hidden javascript ::gasp!:: but I think it’s a better solution than people wondering why their comments are “disappearing” after they post them. That is, until spammers figure it out and come up with a countermeasure.
