Okay, I understand that Terri Schiavo’s parents are a bit desperate right now, considering their daughter’s condition is deteriorating. However, their latest gambit, caterwauling and laying blame where it isn’t due, is getting very tiring and annoying.
“Governor Bush, you have the power to save my daughter,” Mary Schindler said. “Please, please do something.”
Schiavo’s father was more forceful.
“[Bush] has put Terri through a week of hell and our family through a week of hell by not acting,” Bob Schindler said. “He has to come up to the plate.”
A week of hell? He has to come up to the plate? Oh, let’s review.
President Bush, with the help of congresss, went so far as to effectively violate state’s rights in passing a bill that permits review of such cases in the federal courts, giving the Schindler family ever possibly legal avenue to plead their case, and appeal and appeal and appeal and appeal…
And Governor Bush sought to violate everyone’s rights by taking custody of Terri Schiavo himself, and thus have authority over whether she lives or dies. That attempt was struck down by the courts.
Short of defying the courts and violating the law, there really is nothing else that the two Bushs can legally do. So of course, the religious right, spearheaded by two desperate parents, actually want the Bushes to defy the courts and the law, or so it seems:
So after six years of praise from Christian conservatives, it’s almost startling to hear him compared to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who sentenced Jesus to crucifixion.
But some desperate protesters who see Bush as Terri Schiavo’s savior are doing just that, choosing to judge Bush on his refusal to defy a court order rather than his nearly two-year-old effort to keep the brain-damaged woman alive.
A flier being passed around outside the Pinellas Park hospice where Schiavo has gone without food and water for more than a week urges Bush: “Please Do Not Repeat Pontius Pilate’s Mistake This Good Friday.”
Absolutely unbelievable. Absolutely disgusting. This is really typical of the right: if we don’t like the laws that we keep saying everyone should uphold, let’s change them. And when that doesn’t work, well then it’s okay to defy them… except when you’re the left, in which case you’re just being criminal. Right?
