So, a week goes by and apparently Comcast STILL can’t fix their DNS server issue, to the point where it’s generating lots of press now. Rolling DNS resolution outages continue for Comcast users nationwide. Lovely.
Fortunately for me, I didn’t even realize the problems were continuing because I’m using other DNS nameservers than Comcast’s automatically-assigned (and faulty) ones.
If you are a Comcast user and are still having problems, then the issue may be fixed by switching to an alternative DNS nameserver. Doing this varies by operating system and/or home networking router configuration, so consult your manuals on how to do this with your setup. The gist is to disable any option that sounds similar to “Obtain DNS server automatically,” and instead enable the option to manually enter the IP addresses of one or more DNS servers (the more you can enter, the merrier). You will still be obtaining an IP address automatically from Comcast; that part won’t change… though I strongly recommend that you avoid rebooting your cable modem or router as much as possible until Comcast resovles their issues for good.
So, what DNS server can you use in place of Comcast’s? Quite a few, actually…

i will have comcast when i move. glad to know you will have advice for me then!
Yeah… comcast is okay, IF you can manage to never, ever contact technical support. 🙂 And if you can get around their dumb little problems that they can’t seem to fix right away.
Hi
I found this site via a link from a broadband site.
Comcast baffles me. When it works, its amazing. I am in Maryland, and
for the most part, one can sail rather smoothly.
However, when it goes down, they treat their paying clients with the
most utter disrespect, insulting our intelligence completely.
Now, I have tried this ‘trick’ that you give on this page, and never
had any success with it. I wonder why that is…

Hi Barb,
Just curious, what kind of setup do you have, i.e. what model of router are you using, if any, to connect to your cablemodem? Also, are you using WIndows XP on all machines you connect to?
I might be able to walk you through it if I have more details.
My ULTIMATE fix though, was just to ditch comcast and go to Verizon DSL. Now, i personally LOATHE Verizon, but after Comcast screwed me over enough times, I loathed Comcast more. SO it became a choice between the lesser of two evils, sadly. Wireless isn’t fast enough, there’s no BPL broadband here yet, satellite is too laggy… our choices suck.
I have Windows XP, using a Netgear modem that Comcast supplied, directly
connected to the PC.
🙂
