How NOT to gain labor sympathy

stranded

Okay. I understand that sometimes job action is needed to get the attention of management in a labor dispute. However, there are just some industries where unannounced sympathy strikes only serve to make your position VERY unfavorable in the eyes of the public.

Case in point? British Airways. Maybe forcing the cancellation of an entire day’s schedule of flights (i.e. pulling a “United” stunt) got management’s attention, but it turned thousands of passengers who were stranded into people who are going to look upon you with sheer anger. And it’s hard to pay a laborer, unionized or not, if customers are being driven away.
