Robertson, the fearmonger (or, 2007 off to a bad start)

All right, what’s the deal with 2007?  This year has NOT gotten off to a good start at all.  Lots of notable people have started dropping like flies right around the new year.  Cities thought to be largely impervious to natural disaster were paralyzed, twice, by blizzards and storms.  UFOs are suddenly being spotted and reported in Chicago by credible sources.

And then, scum like Pat Robertson decide to do a little fearmongering to steal some headlines.  His prediction?  A gigantic terror attack will hit the US in 2007.  Millions are to be affected.  And this jerk is trying to paint himself a modern day right-wing Nostradamus:

Robertson said God told him about the impending tragedy during a recent prayer retreat.

God also said, he claims, that major cities and possibly millions of people will be affected by the attack, which should take place sometime after September.

Robertson suggested in January 2006 that God punished then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with a stroke for ceding Israeli-controlled land to the Palestinians.

The broadcaster predicted in January 2004 that President Bush would easily win re-election.

Bush won 51 percent of the vote that fall, beating Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

Do these “predictions” make him a credible soothsayer?  Maybe if you want to believe in this guy, but  just keep in mind that he’s done pretty loopy things.  Read his bio, for instance. Pretty trippy stuff.  In 1979, he was preparing his Christian Broadcasting Network to televise Christ’s second coming, which he belived would happen right about then.  And he flubbed twice in predicting the date of the Tribulation, a bloody 7-year war that heralds the end of the world – one in the Fall of 1982, and again on April 29, 2000.  Of course, we’re all still here.  And it’s a damned shame he didn’t predict 9-11, isn’t it?

So what of this latest prediction?  Well, considering al Qaeda’s been plotting for a while and is quite determined to continue its war against America, the law of averages does seem to indicate that after 5+ years of relative calm in the “homeland,” we’re about due for something big to happen.  So it wouldn’t take a psychic to be right if something did go down in ’07.  Will it affect multiple cities and kill millions?  I certainly hope not.  If anything, I hope al Qaeda wouldn’t give Pat the satisfaction of being right.

So I doubt God would choose a bigoted asshole like Pat Robertson to send a message down.
