Niiiiice flat panel display…

910T

Samsung just released a very nice LCD display that I actually would consider recommending for graphic design work. This is a big jump, considering that nearly any graphic designer worth their salt would never recommend anything but a CRT display because LCDs tend to lack the sufficient color definition required for that kind of work. But I definitely think the 910T will change that.

My quick review:

It’s a 19 incher, actually has a full-range 32 bit color display, it IS fully ICM-profile compliant, and the really nice thing? It TILTS 90 degrees to give you a portrait display, allowing you to actually work on a full page graphic or layout at larger than actual size. NICE.

I have one. It is bright. It has no bad pixels. It is clear and sharp. And did I say it was bright? You can also manually adjust each of the RGB channels in the event that you’re a complete perfectionist like myself, either through the standard OCM display, or through included software that lets you plot your own spectrum response curves.

Also: it has a 3 year warranty which includes the backlighting tube, though I scored an extra year of extended warranty through the card I used to buy it.

Unfortunately, it is not cheap. I was able to get one through Tiger Direct for just over $600 after shipping. But GODDAMN is it worth every fuckin’ penny. It totally blows the doors off my old NEC 97F tube display on its best day (which, despite originally being a great monitor, people have started to report problems with it).

Fortunately, I think Samsung’s monitor division must have different ideas about quality than their cell phone division. Unlike Samsung’s cell phones, which are all pieces of crap based on my experiences with them, this display seems really, really solid. Of course I look forward to using the hell out of this thing over the next few weeks to make sure it really does last.

  1. It’s already here actually. I set it up last night, and it’s what I wrote the review on. DUDE! Did you know that the true color of my site IS NOT purple, but actually navy blue?! *I* didn’t know that! But that’s what I get for sticking with that fuckin’ NEC! 🙂
