My take on all this McGreevey business

Okay, so yesterday the Governor of New Jersey resigned. It was a HUGE bombshell, because, well, either I was hiding under a rock and knew NOTHING about this while everyone else knew, or NO one knew about these rumors that McGreevey might be gay. But now, there it is, in explosive black and white. And the speech he gave is going to be one that is, well, if anything, memorable.

I was really shocked. I mean, I had vaguely thought that it was possible McGreevey wouldn’t finish out his term, but I thought it would be because of the swirling corruption scandals going on in his cabinet. Not this “by the way, I’m gay” thing that we all got socked in the face with yesterday.

With stuff like this, there’s better drama going on in the Governor’s mansion than there is on the Sopranos.

So now of course, the vultures have swarmed in. McGreevey has dated his resignation until after the Presidential election, in order to keep democrats in power for the remainder of his term. Republicans, however, want McGreevey to resign right now so they can have a crack at the office in a special election running right along with the election happening in November. I say, why? The Republicans had their rather ineffectual governor quit mid-term to head the EPA (and later resign after it became clear to everyone that couldn’t tell the difference between environmental hazards and her own ass) . And the person they put in to replace her ran the place into the ground. Now, it’s the Democrats’ turn.

Frankly, New Jerseyans are aware and resigned to the fact that Democrat or Republican, whoever sits in Trenton will just find some way to muck the place up even more than it already is. Now the Republicans want to to be the bully in the trash heap… err, playground, taht is the Garden State. Let the left wing have its turn, I say!

What really scares me about this whole thing though is that Pat Buchanan commented on this mess yesterday on MSNBC about McGreevey’s “coming out” speech. And he actually said stuff for once that I agreed with. Primarily, it was a better handling of the situation than just about any other politician… he came out with it right out, without categorically denying allegations and then admitting to it after he was backed into a wall. In many ways, he handled this better than Bill Clinton did with his sex scandal, or Governor John G. Rowland of Connecticut’s fall from grace.
