China-Car!

Yugo

Remember the Yugo? If course ya do! It was Yugoslavia’s answer to quality vehicles that actually lasted a while. Unfortunately, the yugo wasn’t exactly the best in terms of quality, and it’s hard to find any still in existence on the road today. But it made a splash when it first entered the US Market in 1985, as the cheapest car sold in the US (at a base price of $3990… adjusted for inflation, the car would cost $6633.59 today).

And cheap it was! Insurance companies were reluctant to write policies, saying the cars weren’t crashworthy. Owners complained of faulty brakes, electrical systems, engines that would prematurely die, and defective shifters (automatic transmission? what’s that?).

Yugo Amerika

Unfortunately, all the patriotism in the world couldn’t save the Yugo, and the American arm of the company went bankrupt in 1989. The company lingered on life support until 1991, when the last Yugo was imported.

Why the history lesson? Well, it appears that some idiot wants to start importing cars from Chinese automakers into the us:

The plan is to have the dealers sell as many as 60,000 Chinese-built cars and trucks at prices starting below $10,000, by the end of the year, Shelburg’s business associates told Reuters.

And what would a China Motors car look like?

China Motors

Something like that. While it looks more up to date, it kinda bears a resemblance to a certain Yugoslavian import from the ’80s, don’t you think?

Keep it on the down-low…

Most murderers tend to realize that after you’ve just murdered someone, the last thing you should do is advertise it by walking into a Wal-Mart, bloodied up and trying to buy trash bags. If you’re gonna do something like that, maybe you should kinda… oh, plan ahead and buy your supplies beforehand? And if, by chance, you forgot something, it’s a good idea to wash up first before being seen in public, you know?

In other news…

The site was down this morning due to a network configuration glitch. What can I say? I can only afford a crappy, home made, out of date “server” at the moment. 🙂 Everything should be up and running again now, so let’s hope it stays that way until summer’s end when I can (hopefully) buy some better equipment.

For the record, I still prefer this to a third party hosting service. Up until now, the reliability has been better than I’ve experienced through other means.

Latest vulnerability found and dismantled… for now

The source of one of the latest Microsoft Windows vulnerabilities was found and disabled as a Russian web server was located and shut down. The server carried a payload of trojan horse software that was being downloaded by computers infected with some malware I had mentioned here earlier.

The offending server’s shutdown was only seen as a temorary fix though. Microsoft has yet to release a patch for one of the exploits used in this latest attack, so until that patch is developed, it’s only a matter of time before someone else exploits this bug and directs it to do their bidding.

Whitney Houston: How much is too much?

The Recording Industry is settling various class action lawsuits in part through distrbuting music to public schools throughout the U.S. In truth though, it looks like they’re just using the settlements as a convenient way to dump old, unsellable inventory, as evidenced by the Great Whitney Houston Dump in Puget Sound.

Why would anyone punish public schools by inflicting Whitney Houston on their student populations? 🙂
