Apple “fastest computer” claims, bogus?

Mac G5

According to a government-backed UK consumer rights group, the Power Mac G5 is not the “worlds’ fastest personal computer.”

The ASA said the complaints against the G5 magazine ad came from members of the public in Middlesex and Monmouthshire.

There were three objections to the ad;

– that the machine was “the world’s fastest personal computer”
– that it was “the first with a 64-bit processor”
– and that “the systems built around the G5 can shatter the 4-gigabyte memory ceiling that limits every other PC on earth”.

The first claim was based on independent tests comparing the Apple computer with two of its competitors – the Dell Dimension 8300 and the Dell Precision 650.

The ASA said it took expert advice and concluded that the claim could not be justified.

Okay, I know that a good third of my posts here seem to be very anti-Mac. In my defense, I’ve only posted six or seven times… the site was just relaunched four days ago. And it’s not my fault that in that span, Apple has managed to make a lot of news for itself that isn’t favorable. 🙂

I will say again: I like Macs. They’re nice machines. And I will readily agree that Apple has some nice products here and there (I own an iPod 40GB myself). But it’s hard to deny that Macs are overpriced (in fact, price is the reason why I don’t use one personally), and I’m consistently annoyed by Apple’s penchat for being, well, arrogant as all hell. Not to mention, their user base are a bunch of nutbag fanatics who will freak at the alleged “horrible mutilation” of one of their beloved Macs. It turned out to be an April Fool’s joke, but the death threats and accounts of severe emotional trauma that gushed forth from the Mac zealots was… well… disconcerting.

It’s just a machine, folks. When a Mac demonstrates sentience, I’ll shed a tear for it.

Ray Charles: 1930-2004

Ray Charles

I think I’m going to mourn the passing of Ray Charles a lot more than I am
going to think about Ronald Reagan. You can contribute so much more to this
world by making someone smile, than you can by delegating, posturing and politicking.
The human condition is about feeling, and about seeking joy.. not about hard-balling
with other dignitaries who have lost their way and are concerned about missles, national security
and capitalism vs. communism.

Can you guess who I think is more deserving of a state funeral?

Reagan-mourning turns into insanity

During a lunch with some of my co-workers yesterday, my boss – who has a way of saying things that other people I know would never have the guts to say – asked “So, have you had enough of all this Reagan business, yet?”

I wasn’t ready to say yes just yet. Not so much because, as is common in this age of hyperpatriotism we seem to be living in, a yes answer would be viewed as somehow “unpatriotic” or “un-American.” But because I hadn’t realized how many people are working themselves into such hysterics over Ronald Reagan’s passing. Now, after hearing about some of the harebrained schemes people are concocting to memorialize the guy, I’m fed up. So much so that I’m taking my “un-patriotism” to the level of ranting.

Say it with 404

When you really want to be passive-aggressive against your needy non-computer-literate colleagues, say what you really think about your users with a custom 404 message.

Note: the above link puts some non-work safe language in nice big bold letters ala typical Microsoft 404 prompts. You’ve been warned.

This site’s 404 is far less humorous, but I get get over my passive aggression by charging a fee for my services. 🙂
