How to take real risks with other people’s money

So, I think anyone who lives in the Washington, DC area is aware by now that one of the area’s historic banks is in trouble. Big trouble. And, to get out of this trouble, this bank has agreed to be acquired by another bank.

Normally, bank mergers are a slow process. They take up to a year or more to get approval, the deal closes, and then slowly, signs start to change and accounts get converted. All in all, it could be up to two years before all traces of the acquired bank’s brand identity disappear. This is a necessary thing, because people are naturally skeptical when the place that keeps their hard earned cash suddenly changes names and ownership.

A NeoCon gets the ultimate comeuppance

Mayor West

The northwestern region of the US tends to be viewed as one of the few “blue state” areas of the country where liberal thinking is still the norm. So, I would have to say that Jim West, mayor of Spokane, WA, is quite an oddball, given his quite conservative track record. According to the New York Times (registration required, but you can use BugMeNot to bypass this requirement):

Mayor West is a staunch opponent of gay rights, and recently threatened to veto a measure passed by the City Council that would grant benefits to domestic partners. He once promoted a bill in the Legislature to outlaw teenage sex, gay or straight.

Quite the moral guy, or so it seems. Because for all his espousing of neo- conservative moral values, he sure as hell doesn’t appear to be practicing them. Evidence gathered over a three-year investigation by the Spokesman-Review seems to indicate that not only is he interested in relationships with gay men, he’s interested in gay young men. So much for preaching against gay sex and teen sex.

Let’s get stupid about the cell phones

So, a school district in Georgia suspended a kid for 10 days for refusing to end a cell phone call while in school. Normally I’d be all for this, but the call was from the kid’s mom… who’s serving in Iraq.

The 10-day suspension was issued because Kevin Francois was “defiant and disorderly” and was imposed in lieu of an arrest, Spencer High School assistant principal Alfred Parham said.

So, let me get this straight. They were planning on arresting this kid over a stupid phone call?

What’s worse, the story goes on to reveal that the kid was on his lunch break. That’s right, he wasn’t in class, and he probably wasn’t even interrupting anything or anyone as he took the call. Not to mention, it’s probably difficult as hell and expensive as hell for a soldier serving in Iraq to arrange a phone call back home. While it’s quite easy for us back in the states to sit back and dial a few digits, and in many cases not pay a dime for it, reaching out isn’t so easy while being the target of insurgents half a world away in a war-torn country.

And besides… it was his mom. Whom he probably hasn’t seen in over a year, no less.

Parham said the teen’s suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher’s request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.

“Kevin got defiant and disorderly,” Parham said.

Well y’know? If I were that kid, and I got a call from my mother in Iraq, and some anal retentive stick-to-the-rules-and-have-zero-compassion schoolmarm decides to get his or her kicks by throwing the rules into my face, I’d be a tad “defiant and disorderly” too.

Updated story here, where it appears the district is starting to exaggerate its claim in order to bolster ts position.

Does scaredpoet have to smack a network?

Looks like those of us anticipating another season of Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central are going to have to wait a little longer. The show was already on hiatus for one, year, and after finally resuming production, Comedy Central has halted progress again, for unknown reasons:

Comedy Central has postponed the premiere of its hit series “Chappelle’s Show” less than a month before it was scheduled to return for a third season.

The network offered no rationale for the decision Wednesday, releasing only a brief statement: “Comedy Central has suspended production on the third season of “Chappelle’s Show” until further notice. All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future.”

Oh, and for those who don’t get the headline reference…
