Okay, this one I really don’t get at all. The United Church of Christ, in a wide departure from the message that most major Christian Religious sects are espousing these days, has launched an ad campaign welcoming gay and lesbian people into their congregations. This has to be a good thing, no matter what side of the debate you’re on. If you’re morally conservative, this means gay people are are getting the word of God and might, shall we say, have a change of preference (of course this theory is all wrong, but I digress). And if you’re morally liberal, well this gives the gay community a place to worship if they so choose. Everyone’s happy. Right?
Wrong. The major networks have all decided that the subject is too controversial, and has refused to run the ads.
“It went against our long-standing policy of not accepting ads that deal with issues of public controversy,” the network’s spokeswoman said.
Right. The networks have never caused controversy before, ever.
I agree with the UCC’s position on this one… a rarity that I would ever agree with a church on anything…
“It’s ironic that after a political season awash in commercials based on fear and deception by both parties seen on all the major networks, an ad with a message of welcome and inclusion would be deemed too controversial,” says the Rev. John H. Thomas, the UCC’s general minister and president. “What’s going on here?”
