Fan hysteria

So, Michael Jackson is playing sick to gain sympathy. Sadly, it seems to be working:

On Monday, defense lawyer Tom Mesereau consulted in chambers with Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville. They were joined by a doctor wearing scrubs, who had come with Jackson from the nearby Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital.

The nearly 45-minute delay in the proceedings was not explained to jurors in open court.

As Jackson waited for his lawyers to emerge from the judge’s chambers, he left court dabbing at his nose with a tissue. Several fans in the courtroom broke into tears at his apparent pain.

Oh, boo hoo. Guilty or not, childlike or not, and white or not, Jackson is 47 years old and needs to grow a spine, and so do his fans.

When life becomes political commodity

The Terri Schiavo case. Need I say more?

This is a story that has been nagging on me for quite a while. Not only because I hate the way in which such basic spiritual and medical issues have been turned into political bargaining chips, but also because I’ve seen situations similar to this first-hand, and have had to agonize with others over what someone who has fallen silent would want in such a position.

“[*exasperated sigh*] You’re supposed to be here to protect me!”

“Well what are we protecting you from? A wrong Cheeseburger? What, is this like a harmful cheeseburger or something?”

It’s amazing what some people consider an emergency. How much do you want to bet this person was obliviously chauffeuring her two kids around in a Hummer H2, to top it off?

Blackberry suit: finally settled

7100t

Fear not Blackberry users: thanks to a settlement by RIM of the patent infringement suit against it, RIM‘s Blackberry technology can continue to be used in th US, now unhindered by any patents. The legality of RIM’s selling the devices in the US was in question, after NTP Inc. sued Research in Motion.

NEW YORK – Research In Motion Ltd., the Canadian maker of BlackBerry wireless e-mail devices, said Wednesday it will pay $450 million to resolve litigation with NTP Inc., a Virginia company which said the devices infringed on in its patents.

Gee, only half a bil. That’s a bargain these days, especially considering the alternative.
